The inaugural Carpathian 8 Summit in western Ukraine could pave the way for strengthened regional cooperation, with implications for security and economic integration among eight European countries. Hosted by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, the summit aims to boost collaboration on key issues such as energy, transport, and cross-border trade, with investment agreements exceeding €1 billion on the horizon.
Held from September 18 to 20 in Ivano-Frankivsk Oblast, the three-day event brought together leaders from Ukraine, Poland, Romania, Serbia, Czechia, Hungary, Slovakia, and Austria. The summit’s discussions highlighted the potential for deepening trade and investment links across the Carpathian region, with nearly 100 projects presented by participating nations.
Key figures in attendance included Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk, Romanian President Nicusor Dan, and Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic, while Slovakia was represented by a senior foreign ministry official. The summit’s economic forum attracted around 500 business representatives, underscoring the region’s commitment to economic growth and integration.
Poland reiterated its strong support for Ukraine, emphasizing the importance of regional unity in the face of ongoing challenges. The summit also serves as a platform for discussing Ukraine’s European integration efforts and fostering cooperation with countries holding varied positions on military assistance to Kyiv.
In addition to economic collaboration, the summit addressed the enhancement of transport and energy infrastructure, which is crucial for improving regional mobility.
