Vietnam’s VNREDSat-1 satellite program has set the stage for enhanced collaboration with France in the field of space technology. With future endeavors poised to advance next-generation satellites, technology transfer, training, and domestic capabilities, this initiative marks a pivotal step forward. Launched on May 7, 2013, VNREDSat-1 represents Vietnam’s first Earth observation satellite. Officially handed over for operation in September 2013, it continues to function in 2026, surpassing its initial five-year design lifespan with 14 years of service.
The program has significantly contributed to Vietnam’s expertise in satellite technology. Between 2011 and 2013, Vietnamese engineers underwent extensive training in both France and Vietnam, covering system design, satellite operations, and troubleshooting. This experience enabled them to address technical issues independently, transitioning from merely following transferred procedures to crafting their own solutions. Additionally, Vietnam established an integrated remote-sensing system capable of handling imaging requests, satellite control, data reception, processing, storage, and distribution. Since 2020, VNREDSat-1 has provided nearly 30,000 satellite images for applications in environmental and natural-resource management, disaster monitoring, scientific research, socio-economic development, and defense and security.
Trần Hồng Thái, President of the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology, emphasized that the program has laid a critical technical and human-resource foundation for upcoming satellite projects. However, he highlighted that achieving greater technological self-reliance will necessitate further development in satellite design, payloads, electronics, flight software, assembly, integration, testing, and ground systems.
A new chapter of cooperation was inaugurated during French President Emmanuel Macron’s state visit to Vietnam in May 2025. During this visit, the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology, Airbus Defence and Space, and the French National Centre for Space Studies signed a declaration of intent for long-term collaboration in space technology and Earth observation. The partners are currently exploring a next-generation Earth observation system and various technological options for a proposed VNREDSat-2.
Looking ahead, future cooperation is anticipated to emphasize greater Vietnamese involvement in mission planning, system design, subsystem development, software, testing, and data applications. Opportunities for Vietnam to bolster its domestic expertise could emerge in areas such as control software, remote-sensing image processing, artificial intelligence, ground systems, and selected sensors and payloads. The overarching goal is to transition from purchasing satellite systems to co-developing them, ultimately achieving technological mastery. This would enable Vietnamese scientists and engineers to design, operate, troubleshoot, and eventually develop future generations of satellite technology independently.
