Amid rising concerns over global fuel shortages, former U.S. President Donald Trump has urged Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to halt attacks on Russian oil refineries and other facilities involved in diesel production and distribution. Trump’s call to action follows a sharp increase in diesel prices in the United States, which have surged to an unprecedented average of over $6 per gallon. He emphasized that Ukraine should redirect its military focus away from Russian diesel infrastructure to alleviate the growing fuel crisis.
Ukraine has intensified its long-range strikes on Russia’s oil and gas sectors, aiming to disrupt refining operations, a move that has contributed to fuel shortages within Russia. Compounding the issue, Moscow has imposed restrictions on diesel exports, further constraining global supplies. The situation is exacerbated by the conflict involving Iran, which has disrupted oil shipments through the Strait of Hormuz. The International Energy Agency reported a significant drop in diesel and gasoil exports from Gulf countries in August, reaching just a quarter of their levels before the conflict.
Kyiv maintains that Russia’s energy industry plays a crucial role in financing its military endeavors in Ukraine, justifying its continued strikes on Russian oil facilities, including refineries and storage sites. However, the conflict has seen escalation on multiple fronts. Russia has ramped up its attacks on Ukrainian cities and infrastructure, with recent overnight strikes hitting Odesa and other areas, causing casualties and damaging civilian and energy infrastructure.
Additionally, both nations engaged in large-scale drone exchanges over the past weekend. Ukrainian forces reportedly targeted Russian industrial zones, while Russian drones were said to have struck residential and strategic infrastructure within Ukraine. As the United States approaches its November midterm elections, the soaring fuel prices have become an increasingly pressing issue domestically. Trump’s appeal to Ukraine to reduce its attacks on Russian energy facilities underscores the mounting concerns over the war’s impact on global fuel availability.
