On Tuesday, Google unveiled a significant enhancement to its renowned search bar, integrating advanced artificial intelligence to transform the way users interact with the platform. This development, announced at the Google I/O annual conference for software developers, involves the introduction of Gemini 3.5, a new AI model designed to handle more conversational and specific search queries. The updated search functionality encourages users to engage with Google’s chatbot, promising a shift from the traditional search syntax to a more intuitive interaction style.

According to Elizabeth Reid, who oversees Google Search, these updates represent the most substantial changes in the platform’s nearly 30-year history. Users can now experience a more visually rich search experience, with results that resemble augmented AI Overviews rather than a simple list of links. Additionally, users can opt for the original search format by selecting the “Web” tab. With the integration of AI, Google Search aims to provide more interactive elements, such as creating calendar invites or spreadsheet plans within Google’s ecosystem.

Josh Woodward, head of the flagship AI’s development, highlighted the goal of creating a “universal assistant” that is personal and proactive. The Gemini app, as reported, reaches 900 million monthly users, though it still trails behind ChatGPT’s weekly user base. The introduction of “information agents” for AI Pro and Ultra plan subscribers marks a significant expansion, allowing users to perform in-depth research and generate customized visuals and dashboards based on their needs. The Gemini Spark feature will further enhance user experience by accessing information from Google products like Gmail and Google Calendar for tasks such as planning trips and managing appointments.

In collaboration with partners Samsung, Warby Parker, and Gentle Monster, Google also introduced a line of “intelligent eyewear” set to launch in the fall. These glasses, equipped with voice-activated Gemini commands and cameras, represent Google’s re-entry into the hi-tech eyewear market, following the 2014 debut and quick demise of Google Glass. This move reflects a broader industry trend, with companies like Meta already exploring similar augmented-reality glasses, indicating a growing acceptance and interest in this technology.

Google’s renewed focus on AI and smart eyewear signifies a strategic push towards integrating advanced technologies into everyday consumer experiences. The developments announced at Google I/O underscore the company’s commitment to evolving its core products and expanding the reach of artificial intelligence beyond tech-savvy audiences to mainstream users worldwide.
